It's been nearly six weeks since the massive earthquake rocked Haiti, killing an estimated 217 thousand people, and leaving over a one million homeless.
As the number of tragic cases continue to rise, so does the need for relief. And now, a local church is helping out.
"It's a great way to put our faith into action," said Glenwood United Methodist Pastor Pat Lennox. "It's wonderful to help out in a hands-on tangible way."
Lennox's church is now collecting health kits for the people of Haiti. The kits include personal hygiene materials, like wash clothes, bandages, and soap.
"They include a lot of the things that people are going to need," said Glenwood Methodist Member Peggy Barnes. "And they don't have the place to put anything, so we got them all in little bags so they can just grab a bag and go."
Glenwood has already been collecting monetary donations for relief. All of the money is given to the United Methodist Committee on Relief, or UMCOR. The organization uses the funds for humanitarian relief work. As of last week, UMCOR has received a total of $12-million dollars. For the members of Glenwood United Methodist, the health kits are just another way to helping out.
"I think it's our duty to help out the people of Haiti," said Barnes. "We're suppose to help out anyone that is less fortunate than ourselves, and right now, they are the unfortunate ones."
