Uncounted Voting Machines

November 4, 2009, 4:02 pm

There is new uncertainty in the undecided race for Erie County Executive. Today, election workers discovered seven voting machines which had votes which were not counted. CLICK FOR VIDEO  The machines were located in districts in Concord Township, Fairview Township and Millcreek. Supervisors say the machines shut down or stopped before uploading their results because of human error. It's not clear how many votes are contained in the machines. Clerk of Elections Doug Smith said, "We could be looking at another 800 or more votes. We don't really know." The machines have been secured and the votes will be added up on Thursday. Workers today also counted more than 1200 absentee ballots that could impact the race. The work was done by hand because the machine that is normally used is broken. The results of the absentee ballots are expected to be announced tomorrow. But no matter what the results show, Republican Mike Kerner said he won't consider the race over until Friday's official vote count, at the earliest. Last night, Democrat Barry Grossman was leading with 341 votes when the county said all but the absentee ballots had been counted. But that was before the seven uncounted voting machines were discovered.
