Leaves Leaving Lots of Work

November 2, 2009, 5:03 pm

The leaves are falling and the trees are getting bare. And that means extra work for city street crews. CLICK FOR VIDEO

It is illegal to rake your leaves into the street. But nonetheless it still happens year after year.  Erie city street crews Monday were down in Frontier Park and South Shore neighborhoods, piling up leaves on the street, and picking them up.
Then the garbage truck took several trips to the city's compost site, to get rid of them.
And while the crews are technically there to pick up the leaves that fall from the trees into the street, it's obvious that residents just rake them into the roadways.
Something that the Streets Bureau Chief, Pete Petrianni says is illegal, and makes a lot of extra work for his crews.
"Please don't. Because there's going to be times when we're not going to be able to get there for a week. And if they rake them into the street, number one for safety. Little kids they like to play in piles of leaves, and if something were to happen there, someone would feel terrible I'm sure." Said Petrianni.

Other reasons are car fires, a hot catalytic converter can catch fire then catch your car on fire.
And the wet leaves can create car accidents. If it rains, those leaves can make the roads slippery.
