The first thing you should know about Emily is that she is a hometown girl. She grew up in Erie and her family still lives and works here.
Emily graduated from Mercyhurst Prep High School, and attended La Roche College
in Pittsburgh. She majored in Communications Media and Technology
and Minored in Professional Writing and History. She played
softball throughout high school and during her freshman year of college.
Emily started her career with an in internship at KDKA in Pittsburgh, where she shadowed reporters and did a lot of behind the scenes work. Emily says she “fell in love with the business.” After her internship Emily was hired at WICU 12 in a behind the scenes position, producing 12News Today with Mark Soliday. She started reporting in 2006, “The most important aspect of my job is letting the viewers know about what’s going on locally, in a way that makes it interesting as well as clear.”
Since day one as a reporter, Emily has focused on the crime beat in the Erie area, and has become Erie’s leading crime reporter. “I feel I’m really making a difference in the Erie community, telling the stories that affect everybody. Letting people know what’s happening, so they can make themselves, and our community, safer.”
Emily has twice won
awards for her work out in the field. In 2008 and 2009, she received the
Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters, Excellence in Broadcasting Award for
Outstanding Television Spot News. In
2008, for her live reports of the dramatic rescue of three kids from storm
waters. And in 2009 for her live coverage of a scary situation, where a suspect
shot at police, the neighborhood, then set his own home on fire.
