12News Reporter John Rupolo brings us this story on Harborcreek Supervisors plans to try and acquire the Harborcreek Mall site. CLICK FOR VIDEO On Wednesday night, they voted to hire an appraiser to set a monetary value on the 18.6 acre parcel of land on East Lake Road. It is the first step legally in order to try to acquire the land. For years, neighbors who live near the old mall say it is an eye sore and needs to be torn down.
"Its an attractive nuisance to kids in the neighborhood so the very first thing is tear the building down. If it stays vacant that's fine, I'd like to see it developed and get back on the tax rolls," said Harborcreek Supervisor Joe Peck.
The land is owned by the Baldwin Brothers and has been on the market for a long while. The asking price, according to their website, is 750,000 dollars. The structure has been decaying since it closed back in the early 1990's. Last year, the Harborcreek officials declared it a LERTA zone, which would allow a 5 year tax abatement to anyone who developed the land. There were no takers.
The appraisal will be completed in 30 days. By law, Harborcreek will not allowed to pay more for that land than the figure set by the appraiser.
