In honor of Veteran's Day today, there are many events going on around town.
Veteran's Day is an annual American holiday and there are a number of events going on around town today where you can honor those that have served our country...and continue to serve our country.
" Active Aging" is honoring all local veteran's this morning at their 9th annual "Through a Veteran's Eye: A Salute." There will be a flag raising ceremony, guest speakers, a continental breakfast and other festivities. It begins at 8:30 this morning at the Lew Davies Community Building at 1034 Park Avenue in Meadville. There is no cost to attend and all Vet's, as well as the public, are invited to attend this annual event to honor and thank our community's veterans.
Students at the Saint George Elementary School are celebrating Veteran's Day by inviting a Vet to eat lunch with them in the school cafeteria. This is the 4th year that the school is holding their "Bring a Vet to Lunch" Day. Lunches begin at 10:45 and a turkey dinner will be served. The Saint George School is located at 5145 Peach Street.
There will be a Veteran's Day silent vigil in Perry Square this evening. It goes from 5 to 5:30pm and it's sponsored by the Erie Peace Initiative.
In Meadville, Liberty Tax Service is holding a "Support our Troops" donation drive today. They have a van named Libby, that they want to try to stuff full of donations, in time for their Christmas packings for the troops. They're excepting anything from toiletries and food items...to writing materials and games. It goes from 9 to 2 at Liberty Tax Service at 1107 Park Avenue in Meadville.
The St. Boniface School will be holding their annual Veteran's Day luncheon today. Dinner will be served at noon for Veteran's and their families. After the dinner there will be a patriotic concert involving the students. Vet's will be given the chance to talk about where and how they served their country. The St.Boniface School is at 9363 Wattsburg Road in Erie.
And the Wesleyville Veteran's Memorial Committee will be holding a ground-breaking ceremony this afternoon at the future site of the Wesleyville Veteran's Memorial. The memorial, which is expected to be in place by this spring, will pay tribute to Veteran's. Invited guests include Erie County Executive Mark DiVecchio, State Senator Jane Earll, State Representative Curt Sonney and the Erie County Council. The ceremony will begin at 3pm at the Northeast corner of Eastern Avenue and North Street in Wesleyville.
