Jack's Battle

February 16, 2008, 6:23 pm

The gym at Saint George School was packed full of people working out for a good cause.  All the money they raise will benefit a 3-year old boy with brain cancer.

It was in early November 2007, that Jack Sundberg was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer.  Jack has Glio Blastoma Multiform A Tumor.  It's incurable and inoperable.  It's the most progressive form of brain cancer.  Jack's mom, Megan Sundberg says, "he was perfectly healthy until about a week before we took him to the emergency room which started out as maybe dehydration then they thought maybe diabetes and then we found our he had a lethal malignant brain tumor."

Jack and his family have been in Pittsburgh, PA for the last couple of months seeing doctor's at the Children's Hospital.  The medical expenses continue to add up so Megan's co-workers at Jazzercize organized a benefit to help.

Betty Kenyon owns 3 Jazzercises in Rochester, NY, she was at the benefit.  Kenyon says, "all of the Jazzercise instructors think of each other as sisters, as family, and the reality of it is it goes so much further than just the words.  We really step in together when there's a need."

Some of the folks at the benefit got pledges, others collected donations.  Then they gathered at Saint George's on Saturday, February 16th to exercise for their cause.  Kim Pilewski was one of the organizers of the event.  Pilewski says, "(it's) unbelievable!  The room is just full of energy!  Everybody has just been so wonderful, so giving!  It's been amazing!"

So many folks who have learned about Jack have offered everything from prayers to cards.  They want to help out however they can, including Carrie Landis.  Landis takes Jazzercise at the center where Megan Sundberg teaches.  Landis says, "as a mom it really touched my heart, what Jack and his family are going through.  I saw an opportunity to help them and I ran with it.  I can't imagine what they're going through so if I can do just a little something to ease their pain for a little bit I wanted to try my best to do that.

Today's Jazzercise benefit alone raised over $10-thousand dollars for Jack and the Sundberg family's medical expenses.
