Keeping Snow Away from the Street

February 15, 2007, 6:25 pm

The snow is piling up around the city and not only is finding a place to put it an issue, but where you put it can also be a problem.

The roads are still slick and PennDOT is asking you not to make the problem worse by shoveling snow onto the street.  If you do so, you could face a fine up to $300.  Officials say the chunks of snow and slush can cause equipment problems for plows, and also create hazardous conditions for drivers.

PennDOT is also urging residents not to pile the snow up too high at intersections, so that drivers can still see when turning onto roadways.  They also have a digging out tip for residents.  When you shovel your driveway, push the snow to the right side.  That's the direction plows are tilted and that way the plow won't plug your driveway when it comes through.
