Thank You for your interest in WICU 12's digital television (DTV) broadcasting. We are excited to offer this new technology to Erie and surrounding communities. We realize that many people may have questions about digital television and what it means to them and their community. We've designed this information with the help of the National Association of Broadcasters to help answer those questions.

This information will help to clarify what WICU 12's DTV signal is, where it is available to be received, and why you would want to experience WICU 12's DTV programming.

Information Specific to the Erie Area

During the DTV transition period WICU will operate both an analog signal and a digital signal. While everyone is familiar with our analog signal at channel 12, WICU's assigned channel for DTV operations is UHF channel 52 and has been in operation 24 hours a day since May 2, 2002.

WICU 12 is proud to be Erie's first commercial digital television station. WICU's DTV signal is considered to be standard definition. This means that the aspect ratio of our signal will be 4:3. There is more information regarding the difference between standard and high definition at this link.

WICU's DTV signal does not completely extend as far as our analog signal at this time. Our digital transmitter sight is located on Donation road near the Lakeview Land Fill at Robinson road. Our field tests show that viewers who have a good signal in Erie County include:

Communities outside of these areas especially those with hilly terrain will have limited reception. Homes located on top of a ridge line are most likely to be able to receive the WICU DTV signal in these areas.

We recommend the use of a standard roof top antenna to receive the best possible signal. The old style antenna you may have now should work fine and will not need amplification. The antenna should be pointed directly toward our transmitter location and all connections should be waterproofed for endurance.

We welcome you the world of digital television and hope you enjoy the experience that WICU DTV has to offer.
